Game over: 8-Bit to close its doors

2018-01-24 TimeOutBeijing

The last weekend for the city's first pixel-and-pints emporium

Those who like their drinks served with a side of Street Fighter will be sad to hear that Beijing old-timer 8-Bit will be closing its doors for good this weekend.

A hutong bar with a difference, 8-Bit first opened on Jiaodaokou in 2013 before moving to Beiluoguxiang in 2015. With old-school consoles lining the walls, a spacious rooftop and fun booze (RIP pickleback, skittles vodka et al), this hutong hangout pushed the buttons of visitors and locals alike.

8-Bit recently announced the sudden closure due to the building having been sold, a blow for many of those who have seen a string of closures of hutong bars and restaurants as part of the municipal government’s plans for redevelopment. It is not yet clear whether they will be seeking a new venue after the closure.

For those rushing immediately to the vicinity to claim their last opportunity to drink and pound beers and n00bs simultaneously, Comedy Club China, hosted by David Fertitta, will be hel the venue's last open mic at 9pm tonight (Wednesday 24 January). If you’re waiting till the weekend to drown your sorrows, a farewell party has been planned for Saturday 27 January from 6pm onwards, featuring DJs and 10RMB Kirin bottles and shots. There will also be a sale of gaming hardware and bar equipment on Sunday 28 January from 3pm.
